Here is a look at the history of Butler Memorial from its earliest origins more than 100 years ago to Wednesday’s announcement about a planned merger with Excela Health.ġ898: After the primitive medical care in Butler County provided by midwives, folk remedies and the rare doctor, the first hospital building in Butler County was completed with money raised from a fund drive by the Ladies' Hospital Association.ġ901 : The hospital adds the nurses training school.ġ918 : The hospital faces the crisis of the 1918 influenza pandemic. Patterson was the pastor of Butler for thirty years and was followed by Reverend(s) Henry Pinckney, Donnie Woods, Jr., Desmond Walker, Don Dilley (interim minister), Reverend Don Johnson and Reverend Stephen Robertson.The 326-bed Butler Memorial Hospital has numerous outpatient locations and more than 50 primary and specialty physician offices throughout Butler, Armstrong, Clarion, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer and Venango counties which make up Butler Health System. Reverend Samuel Redd, the twelfth pastor of Ezra, enlisted the assistance of Robert Miller Butler, wealthy cotton merchant, and Independent Presbyterian Church. Since 1871, there have been twenty ministers to proclaim the word for this congregation during many sunday morning worship experiences and church members have worshipped in four different locations before reaching the Victory Drive site in 1954. Prince Maxwell, was appointed in the late 1880’s. Through the efforts of First Presbyterian Church, its first location was in a grist mill which was the beginning of transformative church services. Butler Memorial Presbyterian had its humble beginnings as Ezra Presbyterian Church, in 1871, by the Caucasian Savannah Presbytery.
